"The number e was given its name by Leonhard Euler in a letter to Christian Goldbach.

Euler did not name the constant e because it was the first letter of his last name or because of the strong relation to exponentials, it was actually more modest. Euler really liked vowels and therefore in his math works he had the placeholder “a” in a lot of places — mainly bases for logarithms and exponentials — and so the next consecutive vowel to use after a… was e, “the natural base”."
